Keynote - What Must We Do to Create the Post-Pandemic Nursing Workforce Needed by Society and Health Care Delivery Organizations

Peter Buerhaus, PhD, RN, FAAN, FAANP(h) will address the key strengths of the nursing workforce prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to leverage these strengths moving into the future. He will provide an update on the key results of a project assessing the economic impact of the pandemic on registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and nursing assistants by type of employment setting, age, and other characteristics. Preliminary projections of the longer-term impact of the pandemic on the size of the RN workforce through 2030 will be provided. Dr. Buerhaus will review challenges that the nursing workforce, organizational leaders, and nurse educators and policy makers need to overcome so that the future workforce will be better prepared to address the health needs of society.
