Riding the Wave of Change: Teaching Nurses to Surf

Thursday Mar. 23 - 03:15pm - 04:15pm (60 min)

The world has seen what nurses can do, so now, more than ever, it is essential for nursing to seize the opportunity. Nurses need to have change agility skills to ride the waves of change. Nursing today demands fluidity and the willingness to recognize the need for change, the danger of not changing, and the skills necessary to lead and embrace change effectively. The Future of Nursing Report 2020-2030 identified and highlighted changes needed that might ultimately influence all nurses directly or indirectly. The Report identified the nursing faculty shortage, social determinants of health, diversity, equity and inclusion, health equity, and capitalizing on nursing’s impact and importance as essential needed opportunities for change. It is imperative that nurses on all levels guide, accept, embrace, and effectively manage these inevitable changes. Using surfing as a comparison to nursing, the concepts related to the importance of change agility and understanding various change theories are explored. Principles related to high-reliable organizations, innovation, rational and emotional views of change, the importance of data, Roger's Diffusion Innovation, and John P Kotter's 8 Stages of Change are described in a unique and functional format. Like change, the waves in the ocean keep coming and coming. They differ based on the weather, wind, moon, and tide. They can be large, small, fast, or slow. No matter the type of wave, nurses must have the skills to ride these waves of change like a professional surfer, without fear but with skill, grace, and excitement.
