When transitioning from the world of clinical bedside nursing to working as a project manager and communications liaison on a nursing grant, New Jersey Nursing Initiative, a grant of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, it became evident that there was a set of skills that were lacking for her to succeed in that new role. Dr. Nina Vaid Raoji continued to notice this in other nurses when developing a program with her volunteer work for NJAC to match nurses with community-based organizations for clinical experience. It became very clear to her that although nurses were being trained with clinical skills and didactic knowledge, they were lacking development of their 'people' skills, i.e Soft Leadership Skills, that are foundational for success inside and beyond the four walls. As the future of health becomes more decentralized, it will be more important than ever before that nurses develop these critical Soft Leadership Skills. Dr. Raoji committed herself to elevating nursing's impact by designing an interactive program to develop these skills, which was the focus of her doctoral work at Yale University.

Developing effective communication techniques, the art of networking, the thinking behind team-building, all to increase your capacity for innovation and creativity are the cornerstones necessary to succeed in the new roles for nursing. These skills will prepare nurses to lead in the new landscape of delivering health in and for the communities we serve. The National Academies of Medicine's Future of Nursing 2020-2030 Report urges "policy makers and system leaders [to] seize this moment to support, strengthen, and transform the largest segment of the health workforce so nurses can help chart our country's course to good health and well-being for all,"(NAM, 2021). There has never been a more critical time for nurses to prioritize their professional development to lead the future of health.

Do not miss this opportunity to participate in the EMPOWERIZEME work session! Founder and lead facilitator, Nina Vaid Raoji, DNP, APN-BC, MSN, RN, has over 17 years of clinical nursing practice as a PICU nurse, Peds ED APN, and Developmental Peds APN, which then evolved into project management with the New Jersey Nursing Initiative, a grant of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Dr. Raoji has worked with the New Jersey Action Coalition as a Communications Liaison and Advisory Committee Member for over 9 years. She now is consulting for the organization to strategize and mobilize the Future of Nursing 2020-2030 report recommendations for the state. Dr. Raoji completed her BSN at Seton Hall University, her MSN as a Primary Care Pediatric NP at the University of Pennsylvania, and most recently her DNP in Health Care Leadership, Systems, and Policy at Yale University.
