Covid-19 has added a new dimension of stress to staff’s daily demands of work life balance. Nursing leadership must forge the way to support the fight against this virus and build resiliency and nurture the compassion of frontline staff. Through an innovative multifaceted approach, the nursing leadership team at Cooper University Health Care developed the foundation that enhanced communication and developed the structure to provide emotional and spiritual platforms required to foster a supportive environment for staff.
The multi-phased approach implemented by the nursing leadership team was initiated with the establishment of 24/7 leader rounding throughout all clinical units. This intervention proved critical in establishing trust while providing first-hand intelligence providing the necessary insight needed to establish and sustain an effective and bidirectional communication system. The next phase included mobilization of an inter-professional team now known as the Resiliency Resource Team (RRT). The RRT was comprised of advanced practice nursing, psychologists, social workers, and psychiatrists that were mobilized to provide timely support and education directly at the unit level.
In alignment with trends identified a comprehensive wellness website was developed and deployed to all staff via the intranet. Also, the establishment of global communication efforts which consisted of daily updates from the CEO/leadership team and the implementation of a COVID dashboard. The dashboard provided full transparency through the timely sharing of crucial information such as: surge plan level, PPE levels, COVID related patient data, and meaningful staff recognition.
Current efforts to sustain this work is in progress and include the implementation of an evidence-based peer support program to infuse self-care and resilience promoting activities into the daily routine for all clinical staff. The nursing leadership focus is on implementing the “Stress First Aid” program via our NWESC council. This model will support a culture of well-being as it prioritizes daily self-care and stress management practices enabling direct care nurses to better care for themselves, each other, and our patients.
